Xu Collection, Middle Volume, Page 1075, Entry 07 Radical: Shell (bèi) Pronounced bàng. Same as 蜯. Belongs to the *shèn* (蜃) clam. One saying is that it is a beautiful pearl. Also written as 硥. Note: According to the "Classic of Mountains and Seas" (Shanhaijing): The Yu River flows north and empties into the Zhao River, which contains many *lǐ* fish. Their appearance is like turtles, and their heads are like sheep. According to "Things in Crimson Pearls" (Shiwu Gan Zhu): The *lǐ* fish is like a turtle with a fish tail and two feet. Therefore, *lǐ* is a type of fish, not a type of *shèn* clam. The "Collected Rhymes" (Jiyun) interprets it as being the same as 蜯, which is incorrect.
