Pronounced bài. Refined rice.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Great Odes (Daya): That which is coarse and that which is refined.
Correct Meaning (Zhengyi): In the rates for rice, unhulled is ten, hulled is nine, refined is eight, and served for the sovereign is seven. The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art (Jiuzhang) millet and rice law states: The rate for unhulled millet is fifty, for hulled rice is thirty, for refined rice is twenty-seven, twenty-four, and the sovereign's is twenty-one. This means that five liters of unhulled millet make three liters of hulled rice; as the numbers below that decrease, the rice becomes gradually finer. All four types of rice are determined by dividing by three to obtain these figures.
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced bài. To mill or polish.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), sometimes also written in a variant form.
