Hai Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Rat (shǔ) Page 1528, Entry 01 Ji Yun and Lei Bian record: Pronounced ba. Ji Yun records: A large, fat field mouse. Bencao: Li Shizhen says its fur can be used to make garments that are very warm and impenetrable to dampness. Zhengzitong: The Ju-ba mouse lives in the mountains and marshes of Xifan; it digs tunnels in the earth to nest and resembles an otter in appearance. People dig them up for food. The Mongols call it dara-buhua. The Tang History records the Ju-ba mouse, with the name describing its corpulent size. Tang Yun: Pronounced pu. This is often erroneously corrupted as tu-ba. The Bencao follows this mistaken usage, which is incorrect. Also, Ji Yun: Pronounced fei. This is a variant of a character referring to a type of rat whose cry resembles the barking of a dog.
