Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (Gongyang Zhuan), sixth year of Duke Xuan: The chef did not cook the bear paw thoroughly; the Duke was enraged and struck him with a ladle, killing him.
Also pronounced qiao (level tone). Same as the character for striking. Meaning: to strike horizontally. Sometimes written in a variant form (gao).
Also pronounced jiao (level tone). Same as the character for striking.
Verification note: In the Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (Gongyang Zhuan), second year of Duke Xuan, the text mentions the chef not cooking the bear paw thoroughly. Following the original text, the year has been corrected from second to sixth.
