According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen), it is a term of praise for a subject who exerts full effort.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Great Odes (Daya) section: The many excellent gentlemen of the King are numerous.
The Mao Commentary (Maozhuan) says: It is similar to the word for numerous and orderly.
The Zhu Commentary (Zhuzhu) says: It means many.
Also, according to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means correct or upright.
Also a surname.
According to the Universal Genealogy of Surnames (Wanxing Tongpu), there was Ai Huan, a Governor of Pingyang during the Han Dynasty.
Note: Ai and the character for lush vegetation (ai) are the same; the Dictionary of Characters (Zihui) separates them into the Speech radical and the Vegetation radical, which is incorrect.
